The Charter & Criminal Justice

This course examines the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on re‐shaping of the Canadian Criminal Justice System of the past 25 years. The class explores how the Charter changed definitions of offences, proceedings regarding detention, arrest, search and seizure, interrogation, trial hearings, sentencing and punishment. The class studies the possible remedies used by Canadian courts for restoring Charter rights infringed by criminal justice agencies. The discussion is based on the most significant Charter cases of the Canadian Supreme Court.
